A team of fifteen from The Master's Way UMC and Good Shepherd UMC traveled to the UMCOR Sager Brown Depot in
Baldwin, Louisiana on Janurary 6 - 11, 2008. Sager Brown is the
United
Methodist
Church 's staging area for donated emergency supplies, ready to be shipped at a moment's notice anywhere in the world for disaster relief. We spent our time working in the depot preparing health kits, baby layettes, school kits, sewing kits, and flood buckets, and unloaded trucks, worked in the sewing room, packed boxes, and did home repair for the elderly and infirm in this very poor community. Living, eating, working, and serving together, we had a great time, and are already looking forward to our next trip scheduled for March 15-20, 2009. Why not join us?

The Master's Way had seven volunteers who took part in "Gleaning for the Lord" to help feed the hungry.
They worked for about two and a half hours and harvested about 1500 lbs of sweet corn and 450 lbs of cabbage. These items were delivered to the Salvation Army Food Kitchen, Breaking Free Rescue Mission, the Limestone County jail kitchen, and various churches for distribution to the needy and elderly. A very rewarding morning of work -- and a lot of fun, too!
Gleaning projects like this one are set up by the Society of St Andrew, which has a representative in Birmingham. There will be other opportunities to glean harvested fields in our area, and we have asked to be included in the future. Watch for the next work day, and be thinking of good places to take the proceeds (housing projects, local food pantries, etc).

In July, five Master's Way folks went with a team of 24 to a remote town (Yoro) in the mountains of . They rode a school bus each day over dirt roads to a much smaller village (Yorito) where they set up a medical clinic in a "mission house" with the team doctor and nurse practitioner. Leslie set-up and ran the pharmacy, issuing thousands of prescriptions. Lisa used her excellent Spanish skills screening patients in triage. Other team members worked on construction projects, conducted an eyeglasses clinic, held

School (nearly 400 kids!), led Bible studies for older kids, and helped with the daily soup kitchen for the local children. Meanwhile, Kerry and Jack were on the Veterinary team, which went to more remote areas to provide much needed animal care (inoculations, parasite control, and emergency care). The countryside is beautiful and the kids are adorable. The poverty is everywhere and the need is great. Want to go along next year?

The Master's Way Christmas Party was a big success!! Of course, the food was delicious. The dirty Santa exchange was lots of fun. The big hits for the ornaments that were fought over were the hedgehog, the disco ball, the pink pig and the cow. The only ornament that wasn't fought over was the trout or some kind of fish. Everything was clean and honest fun with no married couple collusion going on at all. :-)
