Sermon: Love That Does, 1 John 5:1-56/7/2009 Sermon: "Love That Does"
1 John 5:1-5
As one reads the Gospels and Letters that are found in the New Testament, you soon see that there is this re-occurring mention and emphasis on love. Obviously there is something important for us to understand regarding love, but what is it? Is it the love we see presented on prime-time TV? Is it more simply the love we have for our spouse and family? Or, is it the love we have for our jobs or hobbies or maybe even our pets? When you think about it, we use the word "love" frequently and loosely in our everyday lives, but do we really know what it means to love God and others the way He desires of us? Does the love God calls us to show and live by come without sacrifice on our part? This Sunday, I will be presenting a message about love and the relation of love and obedience. The Scripture reading will come from 1 John 4:21 – 5:5. If you get a chance, you may want to read all of 1 John before Sunday (don't worry, it is a short letter) and you will soon see that "love" appears frequently in John's letter. In fact, John uses the word over 50 times in this letter (even more times in his Gospel).
Peace and grace to you all.
Scott
