Sermon: The Compliment Machine, James 1: 17-27 8/30/2009 You heard about the wife who wakes up after surgery still loopy, her eyes fluttering, “Wow! You are really handsome,” she says. Flustered and feeling good, he continues his vigil while she falls back asleep. Later, the wife wakes up and says, “Hey, aren’t you cute sitting there…” Stunned, the husband asked, “I thought I was really handsome?”
“Well,” she says, “the medicine is wearing off.”
Ah, the power of words. It was words that God used to create the world; it was words that called Lazarus from his grave. It was words that made us feel loved when we were children. And it was words that crushed our spirits. James captures the profound power of the spoken word and calls us to be doers of our faith and not hearers only. Having been trained by our faith in Christ, we are like the tiger at the circus, we are tamed. The looseness of our tongues has been brought in line; we are authentic in our faith. James says that this is the way our Christian faith should be seen. I hope to see you Sunday.
