Sermon: Iconoclastic Christmas, Luke 1: 39-45

12/20/2009

To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower,
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour. William Blake, from “Auguries of Innocence.”

Interesting isn't it?  We read philosophers like Blake and wonder, what is he talking about?  The idea that universe is everything and everything the universe.  It is great poetry and terrible theology.  The beauty of Christmas is that the one true God of Scripture is other than the known universe, creator of all, judge of all, the one sustaining all, choosing through the gift of the Christ child to be the redeemer of all.  The picture yet to be captured on canvas, the love story yet to be grasped by the poets, is seen by shepherds in a stable.  The world reconciled by a Savior born in a manger.  Talk about Glorious!    Barry
