Sermon: More than a Genius; Luke 2: 41-52 12/27/2009 What is genius anyhow? I know that those who score at high levels on the Mensa IQ test are qualified to be members of Mensa (genius certifying body). However, those considered to be geniuses have come by this label in various ways. It has been said that it is the result of hard work in a particular area. So, blood, sweat and tears have been the formula for genius. However, one clever person wrote, “If genius is one percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration, I wind up sharing elevators with a lot of bright people.” Funny! Well, is genius the result of serendipity, you know, something happening that was not expected, like say…post-it notes? Maybe… Isaac Asimov, biochemist and novelist said, “The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds new discoveries, is not “Eureka!” (I found it!) but, “Well…That’s funny .... ” To tell you the truth, I suppose genius is some combination of inspiration, hard work, good fortune, and intellect. However it happens the ideas that spring from it shift the world’s point of view in some way. Jesus goes beyond Genius. He changed the world, not with being clever, but by being the Son of God. He is, shall we say, divine genius. He is still changing the world one life at a time. Come worship with us and celebrate the Lordship of Christ.
