He Shook Up The World; Luke 19: 28-404/1/2007 I hope not to bore you. I just want to examine this week’s lesson (Luke 19: 28-40) with you just a little bit. It is of course Palm Sunday week. We know it as the parade of Praise as our Lord approaches the Capital and David’s throne in Jerusalem. But we must place this lesson the flow of the entire gospel of Luke; notice that the entry into Jerusalem culminates the journey of Jesus and his disciples which began, in chapter 9, in Galilee. This physical journey represents a time of growing and learning for the disciples. Now the journey concludes in Jerusalem, the time has come for the disciples to live what they have seen and heard: At the instruction of the Lord, they loose the ties on a less than royal steed, and fulfill the Scriptures. They prepare the road for the coming of the Lord, and, finally, with loud emotional cheers, they proclaim Jesus as their coming King. They may fail Jesus in the future, but on this day they live out the very essence of discipleship. They proclaim the kingdom of Jesus the Christ, a kingdom in which the powerful are made weak, prisoners are released, and the poor in Spirit have good news preached to them. A new King is in town and His Kingdom will never be overthrown. It challenges me to declare my discipleship and proclaim my Lord. My citizenship in His kingdom requires a broken and contrite heart. It calls for a desire for all things to be new. Join me Sunday for a celebration of the beginning journey to Jerusalem where Jesus once and for all, “shook up the world.”
