Sermon: A Time for Dying, Colossians 3:1-910/14/2007
Don’t get me wrong today, my message this week on dying is not about our mortal bodies. It is a reference to the battle with sin which rages within us. Paul’s solution to that battle is for us to die. I remember my grandmother on Dad’s side was an avid yard keeper. She won the beautification award in her little town at least once every spring. One year she cut down a tree in the yard because it had become unhealthy. She used the stump as stand for a potted plant. As time passed that little stump began to sprout some limbs. It seems that removing the trunk of the tree was not a lethal blow to the life of the tree. She had not removed the roots. It is a similar thing with sin according to Paul. The issues for us are not answering yes or no questions, but a live or die question. Victory over sin and peace in your life is a heart issue and so we are called to allow the Holy Spirit to strike at the root of sin in our hearts. I hope to see you Sunday.
