The Least Reinforcing Scenario

In my sermon preparations this week I came across a story re-told by Timothy Merrill who edits Homiletics, a journal that I read. It seems Tabitha Ruiz was on her way to class at Seagoville High School in Dallas, Texas, a couple of months ago, and was told by security guards to take off her silver and ruby beaded rosary, a gift from her mother, which had set off the metal detectors. Now this happened on more than one occasion. When she ask why she had to remove the jewelry, the security officials told her that her rosary — beads and cross — were “gang-related.” Tabitha and her mother, Taire, had no idea. Did you ever wonder what the “Jesus Gang” would look like?  I’m thinking I know what the initiation would be, something like, laying down my life and taking up the cross.  I hope to see the whole gang Sunday.
