Don't Take a Knock Off

I guess you all have heard the little story about the guy who received an automobile from his brother as a Christmas present. Here is the short version. On Christmas Eve when the man came out of his office, a little street kid was walking around his new car, admiring it.

“Is this your car, mister?” he asked.

“yea,” he nodded. “My brother gave it to me for Christmas.” The boy was amazed. “You mean your brother gave it to you and it didn’t cost you nothing? I wish ....” hesitating... I wish,” the boy went on, “that I could be a brother like that.”

Several years ago a friend gave me the book, The Real Jesus:… by Luke Timothy Johnson.  Johnson is responding to the Jesus Seminar crowd (who are a bunch of crack pot theologians looking for media attention and money in my opinion).  I digress. Anyhow, he says in his book that the real Jesus is the one seen in the lives of believers who are obediently serving Christ and authentically loving others.  We don’t need a substitute or “knock-off” for the real Jesus who is able to do that in our hearts.  I hope to see you Sunday as we worship Jesus Christ the Son of God, born of a virgin, come to take away the sins of the world.
